My Internship Experience

During the two years of my internship at Trane Technologies in La Crosse, WI, I gained hands-on experience in marketing and customer service. From customer interactions to presenting analytics, each challenge helped me grow into a more confident and capable professional.

Check out some of the key moments and projects that defined my journey!

Guiding Facility Tours

One of the things I did the most was give tours to customers, account managers, and new hires of the Manufacturing Facilities in La Crosse. These tours were jam-packed with information on what we were making, how it worked, and how we could provide for the customer.

Hosting Customer Witness Tests

One of my key responsibilities was hosting witness test visits for our commercial HVAC customers. At the La Crosse facility, our focus was on large-scale, water-cooled systems, commonly referred to as chillers. Customers such as hospitals, data centers, malls, and universities would travel to our site to observe a live performance test of the unit they purchased. These witness tests are designed to verify that the chiller meets the unique specifications for the customer's application.

In my role as host, I guided customers through the testing process, answered technical and logistical questions, and ensured their overall experience was both informative and positive.

Survey Creation & Automation

Throughout the duration of my internship, I continuously worked on a set of surveys and ensured that responses from them were automated to be sent out to different groups of coworkers. Two surveys I managed were the first point of initiation when account managers from all over the world wanted to set up a customer visit at one of our facilities. Using specific branching for the automation, I was tasked with making sure these responses reached the right teams, depending on which manufacturing facility they wanted to visit.

Another survey I created and managed was the customer visit feedback survey. Using my market research skills, I formulated questions that would help my team better understand what it is about our visits that the customers do and don't like, as well as what they feel is missing or could be left out.

Visit Alignment Work

While much of my role involved direct interaction with customers, I also supported a variety of behind-the-scenes operations that were essential to the success of our customer visits. During my internship, I worked with a team responsible for coordinating and hosting visits across Trane’s four primary U.S. manufacturing facilities: La Crosse, WI; Grand Rapids, MI; Pueblo, CO; and Newberry, SC.

Our responsibilities extended beyond logistics. We managed everything from arranging catering, transportation, and other accommodations to organizing recreational activities like golf outings. Additionally, we coordinated with engineering teams to ensure that the right subject matter experts were scheduled to meet with and present to customers. Together, our team worked to create a seamless and memorable experience that reflected the professionalism and values of the company.

Data Collection & Presentation

With customers regularly visiting our various sites, one of my key responsibilities was tracking and presenting monthly analytics related to these visits. This included metrics such as the customer-to-account manager ratio, the purpose of each visit, and other key engagement insights.

Recognizing an opportunity to improve the process, I took the initiative to revamp our reporting system using Tableau. I designed and built a new, organized workbook that streamlined data collection and improved how insights were visualized and shared. After presenting the updated dashboard to my manager and team, it was adopted as the standard tool for reporting customer visit data across all four major manufacturing locations.
